P0011 — Camshaft Position 'A' Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
P0011 means the intake camshaft on Bank 1 is over-advanced relative to the crankshaft. The most common cause is dirty or low oil affecting the variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid.
Cost range: $50–$1,500. Severity: medium. Safe to drive? Short distances only. VVT issues can cause timing chain stretch and major engine damage if ignored.
Most common causes of P0011
- Low or dirty engine oil — Change oil with correct viscosity first — fixes many cases. ($50–$100)
- Failed VVT/VCT solenoid — Common on Toyota, Honda, Ford. ($100–$400)
- Stretched timing chain — Major repair, often a known issue on certain Ford and Honda engines. ($1,000–$3,000)
- Clogged oil control valve screen — Sometimes cleaning the screen restores function. ($50–$150)
