P0087 — Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low

P0087 means measured fuel rail pressure fell below the commanded value. On diesels and direct-injection engines this is frequently a failing fuel pump, clogged filter, or a leaking high-pressure component.

Cost range: $100–$2,500. Severity: high. Safe to drive? No — expect sudden power loss or a no-start. Get it diagnosed before driving distance.

Most common causes of P0087

1. Clogged fuel filter — Cheapest and most common. Replace on interval. ($60–$250)
2. Weak lift or transfer pump — Can't keep the high-pressure pump supplied. ($300–$900)
3. Failing high-pressure fuel pump — Common on GDI engines with worn cam lobes. ($600–$2,500)
4. Leaking injector or return line — Excess return flow drops rail pressure. ($300–$1,500)
